This is a true event that happened in 1966.
After 54 years I am bringing out this.
I was a Foreman Apprentice with the Department of Govt. Electrical Undertakings. We were sent out on training every three months to the different divisions. In mid-1966 I was sent to Kurunegala for three months on Construction training. I took up a boarding house in a Sinhala Buddhist Family. The head of the family was Seneviratne who was a Govt. Rest house Manager who worked elsewhere. There was another Tamil Teacher and both of us were given rooms made out of plywood plank outside the main house. Another Sinhala Teacher was given a decent room inside their house.
Every day for the meals both Tamils were asked to sit on an old table which was separate from a good decent table for the Sinhala teacher.
One night I found worms inside my rice which is Milchard rice. The Sinhala teacher was served with Samba rice. The girls who served were daughters of the family. Kalyani and Damayanthi.
I said that there are worms in the rice. One of the girls (Damayanti) said: “ Take it and throw it out and eat”.
Remember this is a Buddhist family.
Seneviratne being the Manager of a Govt. Rest House comes home every two weeks with sacks load of items, (potatoes, Onions, Vegetables, etc) which he must have redirected (stolen) from the govt. rest house. The wife was a primary school teacher.
Most days I sleep with an empty stomach. Today their house is not on Kandy road near Mallawapitiya.
Either God must have punished them or JVP may have destroyed the house.
This does not mean that all the Sinhalese are bad. There are real Buddhist people who do not pour hot water on the ground cos it will kill insects.
I had meals in Inginiyagala, Laxapana, Colombo etc with Samba rice from Sinhala Families. Tamils were not ill-treated elsewhere except Kurunegala.
One thing I found was that Damayanthi and Kalyani were racist girls. Since it was only three months and was near to my workplace I did not want to leave.
Buddhist monks talk about politics and interfere with politics. Monks should promote theology, not politics cos they do not understand law and order and politics.
Maybe that’s why SL is like this today.
